I remember receiving the call from Bill Truesdale, the publisher of New Rivers Press, telling me my manuscript was chosen for the Minnesota Voices Competition. I was only three years out of graduate school and was beside myself, completely surprised, euphoric, as well as a temporary road hazard. I felt so fortunate, so blessed, to have my poems available in book form. Eighteen months after that phone call, The Second Thing I Remember was published.
I consider this book to be the voice of my late twenties. These poems straddle my transition from Montana to Minnesota and cover the everyday stuff of life—childhood trips to Itasca State Park, picking huckleberries, working out at the health club, walking along Lake Harriet at dusk. The cover art was done by an art professor at Bethel, my alma mater. Putting this book together with the editors at New Rivers was a great experience.
Order this book new on-line (used copies probably abound as well). Otherwise, contact me—I’ve got a few left in the closet at home.
